Kosovo Institute for Nature Protection is the central institution for nature conservation, monitoring the state of protected natural values ​​in Kosovo.

In 1968, the nature protection unit was established within the Office for the Protection of Cultural Monuments of Kosovo. With the decision on the separation of the Section for Nature Protection from the Kosovo Office for the Protection of Cultural Monuments, the Kosovo Office for Nature Protection was established and continued to work under the same name, according to the Law on the Kosovo Office for Nature Protection.

Whereas in 1988 the Assembly of Kosovo issued the law on Protection and Development of Natural Values ​​and Values ​​Created by the Work of the Human Environment where Article 78 paragraph 2 of this Law defines the activity of the Office. Based on this Law, a year later the Assembly of Kosovo issues the Law on the Kosovo Office for Nature Protection and Environment. After the war, with the creation of new circumstances of governance in Kosovo, according to Regulation 1999/1 "all legislative and executive power in Kosovo is transferred to UNMIK".

In 2000, the former Kosovo Office for the Protection of Nature and the Environment was registered with the UN Interim Civil Administration under the name "Kosovo Institute for Nature and Environment Protection" based in Pristina. In 2001, with the formation of the governing bodies of Kosovo, the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning was established. The Institute for Environmental Protection becomes part of this ministry, while in 2006 with the establishment of the Agency for Environmental Protection, it passes as a unit of this agency within which it still operates.


The duties and responsibilities of the Kosovo Institute for Nature Protection are:

1.1.Collects and processes the collected data related to nature protection;

1.2. Compiles long-term database on plant species, fungi and animals, habitat types, ecosystems and landscapes;

1.3. Monitors the state of biological and landscape diversity and proposes measures for their protection;

1.4. Prepares the professional basis for the protection and preservation of nature parts, respectively nature values;

1.5. Develops the professional basis for the needs of determining the conditions for nature protection, management of protected areas and use of natural resources;

1.6. Performs statistical analysis, unification of results and drafting a report on the state and nature protection;

1.7. Participates in the implementation of international acts in nature protection;
