The Kosovo Environmental Protection Agency and the Ministry of Environment, Spatial Planning and Infrastructure, in cooperation with GIZ presented the first assessment of the implementation of AI 07/2023 on Packaging and Packaging Waste, bringing into focus the first concrete data on the reduction of plastic bag use in Kosovo.
What does the report show?
• The short-term objective has been achieved and surpassed and there is satisfaction with policy's implementation.
• Annual consumption of plastic bags has decreased from 335 to just 55 bags per person in 2024.
• The results represent concrete steps toward protecting the environment and public health.
What is needed going forward?
• More promotion to further encourage behavioral change regarding the use of plastic bags and the protection of the environment.
• Continued cooperation between public institutions, the private sector, and civil society.
• Full implementation of the requirements by all retailers, especially medium and small-sized ones.
Supported by the German Government through #GIZ, the event brought together key stakeholders to advance joint efforts toward a cleaner environment.
